There are a thousand different ways to grow your business — through social media, email, ads, or something else. Still, whichever way you decide to build your business, your ideal audience will, at one point or another, land on your website.
Your website is the foundation of your business. So you need to make sure it’s perfect. And you can start with your home page since that is where most visitors will land when they click through to your site and the main access point to the rest of your pages.
According to Hubspot, once on a company’s home page, visitors want to see information about the company’s products/services (86%), contact information (64%), and information about the company (52%). This means that your readers are moving through your website via your home page.
This is why your home page should have captivating copy that connects with your readers right away. To help you make sure this happened, I want to highlight the common seven mistakes you’re (probably) making on your home page and how to fix them!
Most people have boring home pages that don’t showcase their personality at all. It’s a cookie-cutter version of a typical entrepreneur in their industry, kind of like those free website templates you get with your subscription, except the copy version. We want to avoid that.
As a tip, don’t write things you wouldn’t say in real life. Be your authentic self, and don’t worry about turning people off (it’s a good thing). Most people who land on your homepage are interested in working with you or learning more about your services. Give them that information with your own sassy (or reserved) personality.
If you’re missing this mark, there’s a good chance you are trying to be so clever with your copy that you aren’t actually giving your audience the information they want to know. Your audience wants to know three things: who you are, who you serve, and how you serve them.
Tell your reader that you understand their struggles. What’s your story? Have you been through difficult times and reached the other side? Why are you the person for them? What solution and transformation will they receive once they invest in you? Use direct, clear language that shows your reader that you understand their experience.
Your value statement needs to explain how your offer (those products and/or services you provide your customers) solves your client’s problems or needs and highlight specific benefits they’ll get from investing in it. It also needs to show off your uniqueness and what makes you a better option than the competition.
Make sure your audience knows exactly what they’re getting into when they land on your home page. You even want to specify who you work with and who you don’t work with.
You always need to tell your reader where to go next. Your home page should direct your reader to take action, ideally one that encourages them to connect further with you. This is the whole point of having a website. Your CTA can include booking a consultation call, opting into your email list, or leading them to your services page so they learn more about the different ways they can work with you.
You don’t want to confuse your reader with too many calls to action. For your home page, I recommend using a maximum of three different CTAs. Examples include 1:1 Coaching, Mastermind, DIY Resources, Blog, Podcast, Free Resources, and Shop.
You can have amazing copy, but if you don’t format it correctly (or have a sub-par web design), it’s pretty much pointless. How your website looks can have an enormous impact on its performance.
Don’t put huge paragraphs on your home page, and break it up into digestible and skimmable sections. Use headlines, subheadlines, all caps, and bullet points to keep your audience’s eyes moving down the page. Make sure your copy and format work together. Always make sure your home page looks good on a mobile device since that’s where most of your readers will access your site.
One of the easiest ways to “write” copy that converts is to copy-paste your testimonials onto your website, especially your home page. And please, don’t make your reader hunt for testimonials. This means you should never put your testimonials solely on one single page. If your reader doesn’t click on that specific page, how will they ever know how you helped other clients with their struggles? Always include several testimonials on your home page.
You might have heard of these mistakes, but it’s for a good reason. These 7 home page mistakes can really hurt your website performance, so I encourage you to take the time to apply these changes ASAP. To help you along, learn how to write a home page that captivates readers in this post!
